The following three milestone elements are used for encoding (part of) the physical structure of documents:

• lb (line beginning) marks the beginning of a new (typographic) line in some edition or version of a text.

• pb (page beginning) marks the beginning of a new page in a paginated document.

• space indicates the location of a significant space in the text. This is used for vertical space only, without specification of the amount.
